Bhubaneswar: Six days after the Aditya Birla group’s announcement of investing Rs 75,000 crore in Orissa, Chief Secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy is rushing to Kashipur in Rayagada district where the company’s proposed alumina refinery plant could not become operational even after 15 years. “I will go to Kashipur and hold talks with local people and officials to assess what actually went wrong,” Mr. Tripathy told reporters here after reviewing progress made by three alumina and three cement projects in the State. Tripathy is scheduled to visit Kashipur on May 30. Official sources said though the AB Group’s Utkalb Alumina International Limited (UAIL) had already invested as much as Rs. 543 crore in the refinery project at Kashipur, it could not become operational due to stiff opposition from the local people. The company which signed MoU with the State Government for setting up 1 mtpa capacity alumina refinery with an investment of Rs 4,937 crore, was facing opposition since the beginning. ABG’s Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla during his visit to the State on May 22 had drawn attention of the Chief Minister and sought government’s help to tide over the crisis faced by the company. -PTI
