BHUBANESWAR: This year’s higher secondary commerce examination results, which were declared by the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Orissa on Wednesday, sprang a few surprises for many in education circle. The top 20 slots, which used to be taken away by students from big cities such as Bhubaneswar and Cuttack in earlier years, figured names of smaller towns such Balasore, Rourkela, Berhampur and Puri in the CHSE result-2008. Out of the top 27 commerce students, only six students belonged to Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. While Shradha Poddar from F.M Junior College, Balasore ranked first, four students from Rourkela Municipal College made it to the coveted list. Strikingly, two students from little known places such as Adaspur and Belpahar also found their names among the toppers. There were students from Jajpur Road, Kendrapara and Bhadrak in the list of top commerce students published by the CHSE. Interestingly, the pass percentage among girls was far better than boys. While 84.83 per cent of girls appeared in the examination came out with flying colours, 67.59 per cent boys passed which was lower than the average pass percentage. Similarly, out of 27 top slots in Plus II commerce examinations, 20 were found to be girls while there were only seven boys.
