Jajpur: Police have arrested 42 persons for allegedly preventing the entry of men and material into a steel plant premises by closing its gates at Kalinga Nagar, steel hub of Orissa. Production affectedProduction was affected for five hours due to protest by villagers. The irate locals not only closed the gates of the plant, but also chased away the workers and officers and prevented them from joining duty, General Manager (Laison) of Visa Steels, Sanjeev Behera said. Police personnel in strength were deployed at the plant site to maintain law and order, Additional Superintendent of Police, K.C. Swain, camping at the plant site said. Police arrested 42 villagers on the basis of FIR filed by the management, while the rest ran away, he said. Villagers demandThe situation is tense and we are closely monitoring it, Superintendent of Police, Jajpur, D.S. Kutey said. Tension erupted when about 100 villagers demanded that loading and unloading work at the railway siding of the plant be awarded to them instead of a single man, who has been assigned to do the work. - PTI
