Labour dispute at airport settled

Special Correspondent

Machinery weighing up to 100 kg to be unloaded manually

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The dispute between headload workers and one of the contracting companies engaged in construction of new runway and additional terminal at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, leading to disruption of work over the last one week, has been settled.

Assistant Labour Commissioner (Central) K.S. Nair and District Labour Officer A.V. Geetha Kumari held several rounds of discussions with the two sides and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials over the last few days and brought the dispute to a settlement at a joint meeting held here on Tuesday.

Under the agreement reached between the two sides, the contracting company M/s Vishaal Infrastructure Limited would pay Rs.4.50, including bonus for unloading each bag of cement and enhance the payment to Rs.5 a bag from the day the government raises the unloading charge to Rs.4.50 a bag.

All other items, including machinery weighing up to 100 kg, would be unloaded manually only through these headload workers on the rates being fixed for each item by the State government.

Any other item, including machinery weighing above 100 kg, would be unloaded using machines.

However, if these items have to be unloaded manually, the rates to be fixed by the State government would become applicable. Bitumen barrels would be unloaded at the rate of Rs.15 a barrel. They would also be provided cleaning materials for removal of bitumen after the unloading operation.

Rate for hollow bricks

The meeting also arrived at an understanding on the rates to be paid for unloading hollow bricks, RCC pipe and steel.

The workers were represented by, among others, V. Prathapachandran and Chalai Sudhakaran (INTUC), N. Radhakrishnan (UTUC), R. Vijayakumar (AITUC), G.K. Ajith (BMS) and Ramachandran Nair (CITU). The AAI was represented by Vasanthi Suresh, Assistant General Manager (Engineering-Civil).
