What they say
G. Vamana Murthy
G. Vamana Murthy, president, Visakhapatnam District of Auto Rickshaw Workers Union and General Secretary of the AP Auto Drivers and Workers federation:
“At present, plying by the meter is profitable for the auto driver but many passengers do not prefer travelling by fare-meter. The meter charges are Rs.10 for first 2 km and Rs.5 for every additional km. The passengers can travel up to 8 km by paying only Rs.4 when they share the autos. Therefore, they find it cheaper to use shared autos, without the metres. Mechanical meters have, therefore, become redundant. Digital meters have not been successful in Hyderabad. They can be tampered with more easily than the mechanical metres.”
