Metrowater pipeline damaged by earthmover at Kathipara

Colossal waste: Water gushing out of the Chennai Metrowater pipeline that got damaged at Kathipara on Wednesday. —

CHENNAI: A large quantity of water went down the drain when a pipeline maintained by the Chennai Metrowater was damaged during the ongoing road works carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at Kathipara on Wednesday.

The damage occurred on the “cover pipe” of the main pipelines transporting water from Metrowater’s pumping station in Porur to different places in South Chennai.

A Metrowater engineer said the incident took place at around 4 p.m. by an earthmover engaged by a contractor employed by the NHAI as part of road improvement works along the upcoming grade separator at Kathipara.

Problems were set right by 9 p.m. and supply was restored, he added.

Water is transported from the Porur pumping station to ground-level service reservoirs (or sumps) in Alandur, Velachery, Mylapore and Nandanam among other locations.

Water is pumped through this pipeline round-the-clock for distribution to the respective areas covered by Metrowater, officials of the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply said.

Not alarming

While conceding that a “fairly large quantity” of water was wasted, the officials said there was no cause for alarm as water to the different sumps was diverted from other sources.
