Supply power continuously: ryots

Special Correspondent

For at least six hours in the day and eight hours at night

TIRUCHI: A farmers’ association has urged the government to ensure uninterrupted and quality power supply to farm connections.

It has sought continuous supply for at least six hours at day and eight hours at night.

The State executive committee of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam, which met here on Tuesday, alleged that the frequent power cuts had affected farm operations in the city. With association president S.A. Chinnasamy in the chair, the meeting urged the Union Government to ensure that all farmers, whether marginal or big, got the benefit of the farm loan waiver, without any pre-condition.

The compensation given to farmers for the land acquired for setting up special economic zones should be increased, on a par with the sum awarded by the Union Government, the association said. The compensation for crop damage caused by wild animals should be based on the actual damage, and should not be limited to Rs.15,000. It demanded that the village committees, comprising farmers’ representatives, be constituted to monitor the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

The meeting also requested the Centre to fix the minimum support price for paddy at Rs.1,500 a quintal, and Rs. 2,000 for a tonne of sugarcane. The dues to cane growers from sugar mills should be disbursed immediately. It urged the Centre to resolve the Cauvery and Mullaperiyar disputes.

The association decided to organise a farmers’ rally at Perambalur on July 5 to highlight these demands and to pay homage to those who lost their lives in farmers’ struggles.
