Bangalore: The dance academy Nrityagram, founded by Odissi dancer, the late Protima Bedi, will present a ballet in aid of the Spastics Society of Karnataka, at the Chowdiah Hall here on Friday at 7 p.m.
The cultural event will help raise funds for the Spastics Society which provides diagnostic, educational and vocational services to developmentally challenged children and their families, especially from the socio-economically weaker sections of society.
Ansh, the performance, is a re-conception of a typical Odissi recital.
In “Namaskriti,” one of the ballets, Ganesha, the elephant-headed god is invoked.
In “Aakriti,” the various dimensions of the abstract and geometric vocabulary of Odissi is explored.
Finally, “Nirvriti” goes back to the roots of Odissi, exploring the patterns and forms found in “yantra” (the geometric representation of deities), and pays obeisance to the indigenous cultural expressions that govern the dance form.
The dancers are Manasi Tripathy, Rasmi Raj, Pavithra Reddy, Bijayini Satpathy and Surupa Sen.
Nrityagram, a dance village set up by Protima Bedi, provides creative space for dancers, musicians and choreographers to develop their art.
The dancers study yoga, meditation, martial arts and literature.
