No adverts, no jockeys, just music

There is nothing like listening to melodious music late in the night. Music lovers of Kozhikode can now do just that, for as long as they want to, by owning an FM radio.

Both Radio Mango and SFM, the two private FM stations in the city, have late night music shows. That there are no jockeys and advertisements to interrupt the free flow of music is an added attraction for many listeners.

“We get the most number of listeners for the night slot, ‘Rathrimazha,’ which begins at 10 p.m.,” says Madhu Madhavan, programme manager, Radio Mango, Kozhikode. “We were surprised to find from a survey that that so many people tune in to us late in the night.”

Radio Mango plays mostly Malayalam film songs from the 1980s and 90s, a period when composers like Johnson, Raveendran and Ravi Bombay created some splendid melodies. “We decided not to include songs from earlier time because there was no stereo recording,” explains Madhu.

SFM, however, gives a lot of times for songs from the 60’s and the 70’s, the golden period of Malayalam film music. Rightly so. “There are a lot of listeners for the old classics,” says Suresh Kuttinath, station head, SFM, Kozhikode. “We play new songs too, as long as they are melodious.”

That is the very reason why FM radio has become a great option for the musically inclined. The voices of Yesudas and Chithra in “Andolanam…” (Sargam) waft across from a station. On the other, you can listen to “Thamburu kulir choodiyo…” (Yesudas, ‘Suryagayathri’). A delicious dilemma, one must say.
