Highlighting the current state of our planet including global warming, rain forest destruction and wildlife extinction will be Animal Planet’s special eight-hour-long programme on June 5. Titled “Song of the Earth: Celebrating World Environment Day”, the programme will be aired by the channel from 5 p.m. to midnight addressing critical issues and tracing shocking evidence from around the world. Looking for clues from the interiors of the Savannahs to the rising sea-levels, viewers will follow renowned wildlife conservationists like David Attenborough and Jeff Corwin to understand the current state of our planet. The efforts of Hollywood actor Sigourney Weaver and diving champion Tanya Streeter on preservation, rehabilitation and conservation will also be highlighted. “Song of the Earth: Celebrating World Environment Day” appreciates the enigmatic natural wealth of the planet earth and the need to conserve it. In the episode “Is there a crisis?” viewers will travel from the rain forest home of golden monkeys to the African habitat of the voracious driver ant to find out why certain species are becoming extinct at a rapid rate. David Attenborough will explain the significance of even the tiniest creatures. Narrated by acclaimed actor Meryl Streep, “Ocean Voyagers” will deal with motherhood and parenting, featuring a remarkable newborn humpback whale and his enormous 40-ton mother. Nearly 20 years since the death of courageous and passionate gorilla conservationist Dian Fossey, three-time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver travels back to visit the magnificent gorillas in Rwanda in the episode “Gorillas Revisited With Sigourney Weaver”. In the episode “Diving With Whales”, Tanya Streeter returns to her Caribbean home for the experience of a lifetime -- diving with humpback whales. Every winter the Turks and Caicos Islands are hosts to the great natural wonder of 2,500 humpback whales who stop off on their southward migration. Tanya uses her free-diving skills to the full as she shares the privilege of being part of their world. Madhur Tankha
