PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Thursday demanded that 30 per cent of the government jobs be earmarked for women in the Union Territory.

A resolution adopted at a meeting of the DMK functionaries and activists of the women’s wing of the party said the government should initiate steps to introduce quota system for women in government jobs as it had been done in Tamil Nadu.

The meeting, which was chaired by convener of the Puducherry unit of the DMK R.V. Janakiraman, urged the Centre to take steps to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill so that 33 per cent of seats in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies would be earmarked for women.

Through a resolution, it commended Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for his pivotal role in successfully implementing the Panchayati Raj and Nagarpalika Acts to empower women by providing 33 per cent reservation for them in the local bodies in the State.

The meeting urged the government to provide statutory powers to the women’s commission in the Union Territory.

The DMK unit also decided to hold public meetings, health camps, blood donation camps and sports events throughout the year as part of the celebration of party president M.Karunanidhi’s 85th birthday.

Welfare assistance would be distributed to the poor and downtrodden, besides organising ‘annadanam’ during the celebrations, a resolution said.

As many as 10,000 women activists of the party from the Union Territory would take part in the conference of the women’s wing to be held in Cuddalore on June 14 and 15, Mr. Janakiraman said.

Deputy general secretary of the DMK S.P. Sarguna Pandian, who participated in the meeting, highlighted the significance of the women’s conference.
