BHUBANESWAR: Deaths caused by intense heat wave conditions prevailing since the start of the summer touched a figure of 51 although mercury level dipped below 40 degree Celsius in coastal region on Thursday. There has, however, been no relief for people in western and northern districts of the State where temperature remains well above 40 degree Celsius at many places. According to State Revenue Control Room sources, districts received reports of sunstroke deaths over 165. Going by sunstroke death distributions, the heat-wave conditions were prevalent in as many as 14 districts of the State. Highest seven deaths were reported from Dhenkanal district while its neighbouring Angul followed with six deaths. Six deaths were also reported from coastal district of Jagatsighpur. Other coastal districts such as Khurda, Jajpur and Balasore reported sunstroke deaths of 5, 3 and 2 respectively. Sundargarh and Sambalpur where mining and industry activities were in full swing had four deaths each. On Thursday, highest temperature of 44 degree Celsius was recorded at Hirakud while the industrial town of Jharsuguda recorded 43.4 degree Celsius. Other western Orissa towns such as Bolangir and Titalgarh had above 42 degree Celsius temperature. The State Government had already rescheduled the timings of government offices, revenue and executive magistrate courts from 7AM to 1 PM without launch break from May 26.
