Polls for five Council seats in June

Terms of four members end on June 30

One vacancy caused by MLC’s death


BANGALORE: Elections to five seats of the Legislative Council will be held on June 26, as announced by the Election Commission.

Biennial elections will be held for four constituencies: Karnataka Southeast Graduates, Karnataka West Graduates, Karnataka Northeast Teachers and Bangalore Teachers. The terms of H.S. Shivashankar (JD-S), H.K. Patil (Congress), Shashil G. Namoshi (BJP) and Puttanna (JD-S) expire on June 30.

There is also one casual vacancy in the Council from the Dakshina Kannada Local Authorities constituency following the death on January 26 of Blasius M. D’Souza, whose term would have expired on January 5, 2010. The Karnataka Southeast Graduates’ constituency comprises Kolar, Tumkur, Chitradurga and Davangere districts; the Karnataka West Graduates segment comprises Dharwad, Uttara Kannada, Gadag and Haveri districts; the Karnataka Northeast Teachers constituency has the districts of Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur, Bellary and Koppal; and the Bangalore Teachers’ constituency consists of Bangalore Rural and Urban districts and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike limits.

The election notification will be issued on June 2, and the last date for filing nomination is June 9. Nominations will be scrutinised on June 10, and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is June 12. Polling will be held June 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and counting will be held on June 28. All procedures related to the elections will be completed on June 30, states a press release issued by the commission.
