Women boycott poll at some places

Staff Reporter

Siddipet (Medak): Sixty-year-old Venkamma of Ghanpur in Ramayampet Assembly segment is among the many other old women, particularly widows, who boycotted elections on Thursday. Venkamma, who has the responsibility of running a family of four members including herself, lost her ration card in a fire that burnt her house. While the polling officers have sent her back refusing to accept the confirmation letter issued by the Tahsildar, she complained that she was not given ration and pension by the local authorities. “Why should I vote when a married woman much younger than me receives pension and a genuine case like me is rejected?” Venkamma told the reporters. Similar cases of women boycotting polls were seen in Surampalli of Dommat constituency. In Ramayampet segment, 80-year-old Bandi Ashamma was forced to return without casting her vote as her photo was missing in the ration card.
