Recommendation by police to regularise methanol
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: The State Police will recommend to the Government to enact a legislation to regulate the manufacture, storage, transportation and utilisation of methanol. This is in view of the recent hooch tragedy that claimed 125 lives in Karnataka.
As the police investigation has reached the final stage, the police have decided to entrust the case to the Corps of Detectives for further investigation and prosecution. Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) Shankar Bidari, who coordinated the hooch investigation, noted that stringent punishment for misuse of methanol should be prescribed in the legislation. Though wholesale dealers of methanol are licensed by the Drugs Controller, it does not have powers to enforce search and seizure of premises.
