LUCKNOW: Rail and road traffic came to a halt in western Uttar Pradesh on Thursday as the agitation by the Gujjars spread to the State. All important mail and express trains originating from New Delhi and passing through U.P. came to a halt as the Gujjars laid siege to the rail tracks. Among the trains which were not allowed to move were the New Delhi-Howrah Rajdhani and the New Delhi-Lucknow Shatabdi. ADG (Law and Order) Brij Lal said rail traffic was hit in Noida, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Meerut, Baghpat, Bareilly, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar and Agra. Mr. Lal said normal rail and road traffic was restored at around 2 p.m. There were no reports of violence and the State remained peaceful during the Gujjars’ agitation, he added. He said adequate security force had been deployed in the western U.P. districts affected by the agitation. Meanwhile, addressing a press conference here, Chief Minister Mayawati urged the Union and Rajasthan governments to amicably resolve the issue. She said a law and order problem had been created in the country following the Gujjar agitation. She appealed to Gujjars of U.P. to support their demand in a peaceful manner.
