Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: United Democratic Front (UDF) convener P.P. Thankachan on Thursday protested against the government’s delay in implementing the food security programme. In a statement here, Mr. Thankachan said the Chief Minister’s proposal to mobilise funds from a share of the allocation of other departments was impractical and the government should establish a separate corpus for the scheme, taking cue from the steps taken by other States. Pointing to the continuing differences between the CPI(M) and the CPI over the implementation of the scheme, Mr. Thankachan said the Chief Minister had proclaimed in Delhi that discussions on its implementation were not yet over. But the CPI Ministers took the initiative in getting the project inaugurated. It was the government’s responsibility to state the status of the food security scheme. He said that the UDF would be forced to launch an agitation if the government failed to implement the scheme immediately. He said the emphasis of the scheme should be on preventing paddy land from going out of cultivation, ensuring production and productivity at least at the current levels. He alleged that large-scale conversion of paddy fields took place during the last two years of LDF rule.
