He gives financial aid to the poor and needy especially towards healthcare Anand Singh was awarded the Sri Raghunandana Teertha award recently BELLARY: B.S. Anand Singh, a philanthropist, turned to politics and scored a win in his maiden attempt in the just-concluded elections to the Assembly from Vijayanagar in Bellary district. Hailing from the SVK family, which is in the bus transport business, and of late in mining too, Mr. Anand Singh is a household name in Hospet taluk and in other parts of the distric, for his charitable endeavours. He has been extending financial assistance to the poor with heart-related diseases. He has a tie-up with Narayana Hrudayalaya for eye care, with the setting up of an eye bank at Narayan Netralaya in Bangalore, and he also helps mentally challenged children. In addition, he distributes books to the poor, pays fees for the needy, and makes donations for public causes and religious functions. He has donated three ambulances for use in and around Kampli town. Recently, Sri Sushmeendra Swamiji of Sri Raghavendra Swamy Math, Mantralayam, conferred the prestigious Sri Raghunandana Teertha award to Mr. Anand Singh in recognition of his service to the society. The award carried a purse of Rs. 1 lakh and a citation. In turn, Mr. Anand Singh donated the cash to an organisation running a school for the mentally challenged. IdeaIt was Janardhan Reddy, BJP MLC and mine owner, who thought of fielding Mr. Anand Singh as the BJP candidate from Vijayanagar, taking into account his popularity and his service to the people of the region. Mr. Anand Singh readily agreed to contest and went on to win the electionswith a margin of over 26,000 votes against his cousin Deepak Singh (Congress rebel) and H.R. Gaviyappa, sitting Congress MLA.
