Intellectuals criticised

New Delhi: Activist writer Mahasweta Devi has come down heavily on intellectuals in Kerala for their “failure” to respond to “injustice” meted out to the State’s under-privileged in the name of development.

“Creative writers must have social conscience. People should take a lesson from the creative world of Bengal, which stood united over Nandigram and Singur issue and everyone saw the result,” opined the veteran writer. The Jnanpeeth award winning Bengali writer alleged that creative writers in the State are not willing to come forward on social causes.

Ms. Devi told PTI over phone from Moolampilly near Kochi, where she has gone to agitate on behalf of people displaced due to development work, that “not only poor people are suffering in the name of development but government has also destroyed the railway track on which Swami Vivekanand and Gandhiji had travelled.”

“It is a complete atrocity and nobody from the creative world is willing to come forward to extend support to marginalised sections of society. I am really hurt by the apathy of the creative section in Kerala. Either they don’t have creative writers or they don’t want to get involved,” she said. – PTI
