This Day That Age
The American House of Representatives on May 28 voted by 208-175 to make Alaska the 49th State of the Union, reversing a provisional vote on May 27 against granting Statehood to Arctic territory. The bill now goes before the Senate, which rejected a similar measure passed by the House in 1950. Like Hawaii in the Pacific, Alaska as a territory is governed by a Governor appointed by the President and is represented in the Congress by a delegate who does not have the power to vote. Attempts have been made since 1916 to transform Alaska into a State but opponents have resisted the move on constitutional, economic and legal grounds.
