Letters to the Editor
This refers to your editorial (Two steps back, May 29). It is a shame that the military junta in Myanmar should continue to defy world opinion by extending the house arrest of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, flouting its own law disallowing a detainee to be kept under arrest without trial beyond five years. That the military rulers of a small country boasting neither economic power nor armed might should act with such impunity shows how powerless or callous the so-called leaders of the world are in dealing with such a recalcitrant clique. This should not continue and India must take all energetic steps including coercive diplomacy to secure the Nobel laureate’s release. C.P. Srinivasan, Chennai Your editorial has sent the right message to the Myanmar junta. When the world anxiously waits for the release of Ms. Suu Kyi, the junta is so insensible to its concerns. The adoration and respect for her would go up by this prolonged detention. R. Ponnarassi, Vellore
