Kolkata: The “forcible acquisition of cultivable land for industrial purposes and the miserable condition of the minorities, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, are among the reasons for the unsatisfactory results” in the recent panchayat elections held earlier this month in 17 districts of West Bengal, the leadership of the All India Forward Bloc, a major constituent of the ruling Left Front, said here on Thursday. “The CPI (M), the leading party of the Left Front of Bengal, should recognise that dissent has a place in a democracy. The new practice of discussions after implementation (of policies) should be avoided and the old and time-tested practice of discussion before implementation be reinstated,” AIFB general secretary, Debrabrata Biswas, said. The two-day meeting of the central secretariat of the AIFB had concluded here on Wednesday. “The Left Front should realise that development models cannot be forced on the people who need to be taken into confidence before setting out to implement the state agenda,” Mr Biswas said. He called for more cohesive and “transparent coordination to recapture the political credibility of the Left parties in the State.” “The AIFB believes that a strong Left Front is the only alternative to the current Left Front,” Mr Biswas added. On the issue of rise in prices of essential commodities, the AIFB leadership said that the Centre is ignoring the suggestions made by the Left parties to control the trend.
