Chennai whips Namakkal

Kayalpatnam: Venkatesan’s four goals, including a hat-trick, helped defending champion Chennai whip Namakkal 8-0 and enter the semifinals of the 17th Tamil Nadu State youth football tournament championship for the A.G. Subburaman Memorial Cup at the Kayal Sporting Club ground here on Thursday.

Dindigul also made the last-four grade defeating Tirunelveli 4-0, after leading 1-0 at half time.

Earlier, Vellore and Tuticorin entered the quarterfinals. Vellore had an easy 6-1 victory over Virudhunagar, riding on Kuppusamy’s four goals, including a hat-trick.

Tuticorin defeated Nilgiris 5-3 via tie-breaker, after the teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation time.

The results (quarterfinals):

Chennai 8 (Venkatesan 4 - including a hat-trick, Ashwin, Karthikeyan, Dilipkumar, Karthick) bt Namakkal 0; Dindigul 4 (Satheeshkumar, Rajalingam 2, Sheik Mohamed) bt Tirunelveli 0.

Pre-quarterfinals: Vellore 6 (Kuppusamy 4 - including a hat-trick, Raja, Satheesh) bt Virudhunagar 1 (Murthy); Tuticorin 5 (Abraham, Abraham Gnanasingh, Jebakumar, Arland, Akvinos) bt Nilgiris 3 (Nandakumar, Rajdeeth, Sharat Bahadur) via tie-breaker, full time 0-0.

Thangaraj stars

M. Thangaraj’s half-century helped Jaffer Cricket Academy, Erode, defeat Orange Shirts Cricket Academy, Dindigul, by three wickets in the four-team league of the fourth annual Vignesh sports trophy State-level inter-academy (under-17) limited overs tournament at Dindigul on Thursday.

The scores (league): Orange Shirts CA, Dindigul, 129 for seven in 25 overs (Krishna Mohan 30, P. Karthick three for 27) lost to Jaffer CA, Erode, 132 for seven in 23.5 overs (M. Thangaraj 55); PSNA CA 68 in 20 overs (Dinesh three for 16, R. Sarath Kanna four for eight) lost to Asiatic CC, Chennai 69 for five in 12.4 overs.

Urumu in semifinals

Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, Tiruchi, and Syed Ammal Engineering College entered the semifinals of the Nayagan Trophy State-level Twenty20 cricket tournament defeating Vijay Memorial Cricket Club, Rameswaram, by five wickets and Sri Vari groups Cricket Club, Karaikudi, by 6 runs respectively at Ramanathapuram on Thursday.

The scores (quarterfinals):

Syed Ammal Engg. College 98 in 20 overs (Ramesh three for 18) bt Sri Vari groups CC, Karaikudi, 92 for eight in 20 overs; Vijay Memorial CC, Rameswaram, 114 for eight in 20 overs (Ramar 34, Madhan three for 21) lost to Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, Tiruchi, 115 for five in 14.2 overs (Albert 46). — Sports Correspondent
