Avinash shocks Vigneshwaran

Coimbatore: Top seed R. Vigneshwaran of Tamil Nadu went down to Statemate Avinash Ramanathan 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) in the boys’ under-16 singles semifinals of the CDTA-AITA Talent Series junior tennis tournament at the Sastri Maidan courts here on Thursday.

Vigneshwaran looked brilliant at the start. He played a few bold shots to wrap the first set 6-2. But, Avinash stepped up the accelerator midway through to take the match to the decider.

Vigneshwaran surged ahead 5-3 in the third, but failed to find the right formula towards the end.

Other results (semifinals): Boys U-14: Niral Shah (TN) bt Vignesh Prabhu (TN) 6-0, 6-4; V. Vishal (TN) bt S. Aravind (TN) 6-1, 7-5. U-16: Harish Ramakrishnan (TN) bt M. Senthil Kumar (TN) 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Girls U-14: S.A. Sree Sanjana (TN) bt K.S. Sangita (TN) 6-3, 6-1; Akshaya Chandran (TN) bt Ankitha (TN) 6-1, 6-2. — Sports Reporter
