Bangalore: A.V. Jayaprakash, who retired from umpiring on Wednesday, has stressed the need for a professional set-up for Indian umpires. “I had to work in a bank for my bread and butter while I followed umpiring, as it was my passion. The same is the case with many of our umpires but if the Board can make it professional and ensure that you can earn your livelihood through it, then our umpires can focus better on their career on the field,” Jayaprakash said at a press conference here late on Wednesday night. Memorable momentsOn his own umpiring stint, Jayaprakash termed officiating during Anil Kumble’s ‘perfect ten’ and the Chennai Test in 2001 which India won against Australia as his memorable moments. “I have also made mistakes and it is only human to err but I have watched my umpiring closely and I did it with the best of my convictions,” Jayaprakash said. Jayaprakash is keen to don a mentoring role with young umpires and is also in the running for an umpiring-specific manager slot with the ICC. “I have had my preliminary interviews and I am expecting a call anytime,” Jayaprakash said. — Principal Correspondent
