Rs.5-lakh worth liquor seized

Two persons held on charge of illicit retailing of liquor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police have seized 475 bottles of contraband liquor estimated at over Rs.5 lakhs from a rented house that was used as a godown near Kallumoodu within the Fort police station limits on Thursday.

A police team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Shanghumughom, S. Sanal Kumar have arrested two persons who were engaged in the illicit retailing of foreign made liquor in the capital. The arrested were Joseph D’silva alias Vouwa, 41, a resident of Kennattadivilakom Veedu, Valiyathoopu and his assistant, Sayed Ali, 36, a resident of Chitra Nagar.

According to the police, the questioning of D’silva who was caught with six bottles of foreign made liquor from near the international airport early on Thursday led to further seizure.

The accused led the police to the Kayikkaraputhen Veedu that he had taken on lease at Panayara Lane, Kallumoodu.

The house is owned by an employee of the Kerala Water Authority, the police said.

This is one of the major seizures of contraband liquor in the capital in recent times. After stocking the contraband in the house, the accused along with his assistant was engaged in the illicit trade.

The police have shifted the contraband liquor seized from the house to the Valiyathura police station. A case had been registered against the two under Section 55 A & H of the Abkari Act.

Both the accused will be produced in the court on Friday.
