MALAPPURAM: Five persons, including three women, were killed and 60 others injured when two buses collided at Kakkad, near Tirurangadi, in Malappuram district on Thursday evening. The police said only four victims have been identified so far. The dead included the driver of the mini-bus. The police identified the victims as bus driver Shamir alias Ansar, 27, of Velimukku; Kunjalan, 38, of Vengara; and V. Kadeeja, 50, and C. Sainaba, 50, of Tirurangadi. The accident occurred between Kakkad and Kooriyad on National Highway 17 at 5.30 p.m. when the mini-bus from Kondotty tried to overtake an autorickshaw. It collided with a Kozhikode-bound limited stop bus. The injured were shifted to different hospitals in Malappuram and Kozhikode. The local people gheraoed District Collector M.C. Mohandas at the Taluk Hospital at Tirurangadi demanding immediate release of the bodies of the victims after post-mortem examination.
