CHENNAI: The government has begun work on providing piped water supply, street lights and storm water drains to all regularised unapproved layouts in Corporation and Municipal areas in the State. Till end-2007, as many as 61,812 plots were regularised in Corporation areas (except Chennai), and the total fee collected was Rs.64.77 crore. In Municipal areas (except in 16 Municipalities in Chennai Metropolitan Area), 50,283 plots were regularised. The Municipalities received Rs.23.2 crore as fee. There are about 3,400 unapproved layouts and about 1.8 lakh plots in the layouts in the urban local bodies in the State. In 2006, the government allowed regularisation of plots in the layouts and fixed a fee of Rs.5 per sq.ft. in corporation areas, Rs.2 per sq.ft. in Municipal areas and Re.1 in town panchayat areas. The scheme was extended till end-2007. After regularisation, the government issued guidelines to urban local bodies to provide basic amenities to the layouts. Drinking water connections will be provided to all houses in a phased manner. The government has made it clear that supply of water through tankers should be eliminated at an early date. Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin has directed that once these basic amenities are provided, road works have to be taken up. The local bodies have been asked to send in monthly reports on progress of works to the Department of Municipal Administration.
