PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the DMK on Thursday demanded that 30 per cent of the government jobs be earmarked for women in the Union Territory. A resolution adopted at a meeting of the DMK functionaries and activists of the women’s wing of the party said the government should initiate steps to introduce quota system for women in government jobs as it had been done in Tamil Nadu. The meeting, which was chaired by convener of the Puducherry unit of the DMK R.V. Janakiraman, urged the Centre to take steps to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill. Through a resolution, it commended Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for his pivotal role in successfully implementing the Panchayati Raj and Nagarpalika Acts to empower women by providing 33 per cent reservation for them in the local bodies in the State. Statutory powersThe meeting urged the government to provide statutory powers to the women’s commission in the Union Territory.
