POLLACHI: Three new boats were introduced for tourists at the Aliyar reservoir by Kottur town panchayat on Thursday.
The Commissioner of Town Panchayats, K. Gopal, inaugurated the service by going on a joy ride in the reservoir, which is on the foothills of the Western Ghats.
The boats can carry 18 passengers each and there would be life jackets for the safety of the passengers.
Charges would be Rs. 15 for adults and Rs. 10 for children, for a journey that covers most parts of the reservoir.
The Kottur town panchayat has spent Rs. 4.66 lakh to procure the boats.
Of the 561 town panchayats in the State, only five have tourism potential by their location.
The Government would help these town panchayats to tap their tourism potential in coordination with the Tourism Department and promote tourism to attract more tourists, Mr. Gopal said.
He asked the local officials to ensure the safety of the tourists. By introducing the service, the local body could earn reasonable revenue and the funds could be used for development works locally, he said further.
