Champia misses World record

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: India’s lone Olympic qualifier, Mangal Singh Champia, shot a career-best 684 points but missed the World record by three points in the FITA round recurve bow qualification in the third Meteksan World Cup archery event at Antalya in Turkey on Wednesday.

Thanks to the two 70m (72 arrows) scores, the Railways archer stood first in a field dominated by Koreans.

Im Dong Hyun of Korea holds the record of 687 set at Athens Olympics.

Champia and Park Kyung Mo of Korea tied at 684, but Champia’s higher number of 10 pointers, 41, earned him the top place in the individual competition.

Overall second

The Indian men’s team of Champia, Jayanta Talukdar (678, fourth) and Rahul Banerjee (673, eighth), stood overall second behind Korea with a score of 2035 points.

Korea’s 2039 bettered its own existing World record of 2031 set at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.

Poor show by women

After a miserable performance by the women in the morning, the Indian contingent’s mood was lifted by the men’s show.

Dola Banerjee continued her poor form as she finished 67th out of 100 with a total of 591. Only the top 64 qualify for the individual competition.

Reena Kumari finished 28th with 625 points, Punya Prabha stood 46th with 608 and Laishram Bombayla Devi ended 49th with 604.

The Indian women’s team, comprising Dola, Reena and Bombayla, totalled 1820 points to occupy the 13th place.
