NEW DELHI: Claiming that the initial response to the power amnesty scheme has been encouraging with nearly 3,700 consumers applying for change of meter, settlement of theft cases and new metered connection under it, Delhi Power Minister A.K. Walia on Thursday exhorted power consumers to avail themselves more of the scheme as it offers a most convenient opportunity for settlement of pending disputes and other electricity related problems. Following the weekly power review, the Minister expressed confidence that the new amnesty scheme, that is open up to June 11, would be able to bring an end to the existing tampering of meters and theft cases and would thus enable development of an atmosphere of trust. Dr. Walia said BSES Rajdhani Power Limited and North Delhi Power Limited have received 1,500 requests each under the scheme, while 700 BSES Yamuna Power Limited consumers have come forward to avail themselves of it. Three componentsHe said the ongoing amnesty scheme had three components which relate to settlement of all existing unsettled power theft cases, new electronic meters instead of monthly fixed connections in jhuggi jhopri colonies and clusters and change of old and tampered meters. In case of theft cases, domestic consumers are being offered 60 per cent rebate and commercial consumers are being offered 50 per cent rebate in the assessed bills. Apart from this, late payment surcharge is also being waived off. Dr. Walia also took stock of initiatives being taken for propagation and promotion of use of renewable and non-conventional energy sources in Delhi. The meeting stressed the need for enforcing mandatory installation of solar water heaters in hospitals and five-star hotels. A new scheme is also being chalked out for promoting usage of CFL bulbs which apart from bringing down the electricity bill of consumers also help in conservation of energy. It also reviewed the progress of the Bawana and Bamnoli gas-based power projects which are scheduled to be commissioned in 2010-2011.
