NEW DELHI: An alleged sharp-shooter of the Krishan Pehalwan gang, who has been on the run for the past five years after drugging his police escorts, has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police. The accused has been involved in 20 murders in the past 12 years, the police said. In March this year the police received information that Mahavir, an alleged sharp-shooter of the Krishan Pehalwan gang, had demanded Rs.20 lakh as protection money from a property dealer. Following a tip-off, a team headed by Inspector Ved Prakash laid a trap for him at Najafgarh on Wednesday. When he reached there in a Honda City car, the policemen waved at him to stop. But Mahavir allegedly opened fire at the police. He was, however, overpowered and a revolved purportedly seized from him. Fled in 2003Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Satyendra Garg on Thursday said Mahavir and his accomplices were being taken to Rohtak Jail when they drugged the policemen escorting them and fled on December 24, 2003. Since then, he had allegedly carried out about half-a-dozen contract killings and eliminated members of the rival Anoop Balraj gang. Mahavir allegedly committed his first crime in 1989 when he and his friend stabbed a person at Najafgarh over a family dispute. In 1996, he committed a robbery and killed one of his neighbours. While in Tihar Jail, he came into contact with Krishan Pehalwan who allegedly roped him into his gang. From 2000 onward, he allegedly started targeting the rivals of his gang leader.
