Shayan Lahiri’s got 92.6 per cent to emerge topper among the special category students Government schools faired exceptionally well with their toppers scoring as high as 95.6 per cent NEW DELHI: When he fractured a bone behind the ear at the tender age of two, Shayan Lahiri’s parents never imagined that the accident would lead to a hearing impairment. But that, of course, did not deter the teenager who worked hard to attain 92.6 per cent in the Central Board of Secondary Education Class X examination to become the Delhi topper among the special category students. The results were declared on Thursday. “The CBSE offered me an extra hour as I was from the special category. But I refused to take that. Why should I take extra time when I can compete with the other students? I finished my papers within the stipulated time,” said a confident Shayan, a student of Sanskriti School here at Chanakyapuri. Shayan, who uses hearing aid for both the ears, has decided to take up Science in Class XI with Maths and Computer Science and is keen on studying engineering. Another student, Prateek Asnani, has set his sights on aeronautical engineering. His hearing impairment notwithstanding, this student of Blue Bells International School at Kailash Colony has scored 91 per cent in Class X. His proud father Yuvraj Asnani said: “He has always been a bright student. We put him in school with the normal students. He got all the support from the teachers and classmates. We are very happy that his dream has come true.” With an excellent 97.6 per cent, Ishan Chawla — described as a “serious minded student” of Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram, by Principal Shyama Chona — has emerged as the topper in the Delhi region. An engineering aspirant, he has been the top-scorer without any coaching. Government school toppers who have scored a high 95.6 per cent are Radhika Gupta of Government Senior Secondary School, Vivek Vihar; Jatin Shridhar of Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya, Shalimar Bagh; and Jyoti Tiwari of Government Sarvodaya Co-Educational Senior Secondary School, Dharampura. “I took it just like another exam. I studied for three hours every day which shot up to six hours in the run-up to the exams. But I did no special preparation. I just stuck to my NCERT books,” said Jatin Shridhar. Similarly Radhika Gupta never stopped watching television or going out with her friends because of the exams. “There’s no point in cutting off oneself from the rest of the world. I am not a bookworm and love to participate in cultural activities of my school,” said the youngster who wants to get into IIT to pursue engineering.
