Thiruvananthapuram: The 11-day Urus festival at the Beemapally Dhargah Shareef here will begin on June 6 with a prayer and a procession led by Abdul Khadir Anvari, Imam, Beempally Muslim Jama-ath. Jama-ath president M.K.M. Ismail Sahib will hoist the flag to mark the commencement of ceremonies during the festival. Religious discourses by Muslim scholars, cultural performances, prayer meetings and a conference on religious harmony will be held during the event. Mr. Sahib and Jama-ath secretary A. Ameer Hamsa told a press conference here on Friday that arrangements had been made to host the large gathering of devotees at the festival venue. They said the festival had emerged as a symbol of religious harmony in Kerala. They said the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) had agreed to arrange special bus service from various places in Kerala to Beempally during the Urus festival. The organisers said the offerings and donations made by devotees were used to help the needy and for social welfare activities. The curtains will come down on the festival with a mass prayer for the welfare of mankind and a feast.
