PUDUCHERRY: After months of hard work, scores of tests, tense moments and sleepless nights, it was time to cheer for students of class X on Friday.

Success did not come easy for State first rank holder M. Jeyaraj of Jawahar English High School, Koodapakkam. Overcoming financial constraints through consistent hard work, he came out with flying colours in the SSLC examination with centum in Maths and Science.

His father S. Munnusamy had taken up agriculture after retirement from the Postal Department 15 years ago.

“My father guided me a lot in academics. He conducted regular tests for me at home. I developed the habit of studying my daily lessons and so completed the syllabus in December,” Jeyaraj said.

He has three elder sisters and is a voracious reader too. “My teachers taught me the presentation skills. Now, I want to take up Biology along with Maths in higher secondary classes. Thereafter, I want to pursue engineering and prepare for the civil services exam,” he said.

Aiming at IAS

Aiming at the Indian Administrative Services, he said, “I want to become the Collector of Puducherry and serve the public.”

Happy with his son’s achievement, Mr. Munnusamy said they were solely dependent on agriculture.

“I am carrying out agriculture on an acre of land. There have been many struggles in my family. My eldest daughter is pursuing MBBS with financial assistance from the government,” he said.

Matriculation topper

For Preethi Philip of St. Joseph of Cluny Girls Higher Secondary School, securing the first rank in the class X Matriculation examination was something to be happy and proud about.

“I studied hard for the examinations. Proper concentration in class and studying the daily lessons would complete 90 per cent of the learning process,” she said.

Her father, P.K. Philip, was a lab technician at the Homeopathy Research Centre and her mother was a staff nurse at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research.

Next, Preethi wants to take up the commerce stream and aims to become a Chartered Accountant. She scored centum in Science and 99 in Maths.

Aspiring to be a doctor

Emerging as the first rank holder among government schools, R. Subhashini of Subramania Bharathiar Government Girls Higher Secondary School wants to become a doctor.

“I did not expect this but had put in a lot of efforts for the examinations,” Subhashini said.
