PANAJI: A special committee set up by the Union Government to study the airport controversy in Goa on Friday gave a green signal to the proposed new international airport at Mopa in north Goa. The committee met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Digambar Kamat. Later addressing presspersons, the Chief Minister said the committee had recommended that the land acquisition for the proposed airport could be taken up by the State. He said, accordingly, the process of land acquisition, which had been virtually put on hold, would be expedited. On holdThe proposal had been put on hold over a year ago after the erstwhile Congress-led Government in the State faced opposition for a second airport when south Goa-based Dabolim international airport could be continued for civilian use with major expansion. ‘Study viability’The former south Goa MP Churchill Alemao, who is now back in the Congress, had virtually compelled the Congress central leadership to study the viability of two international airports for the tiny tourist State. The committee, after elaborate deliberations and with inputs from expert agencies, has arrived at the conclusion that Goa can go ahead with new airport proposal even as it continues to optimally utilise the Dabolim airport under Naval jurisdiction for civilian use too. Moreover, the Union Government has been funding expansion of the Dabolim international airport to enhance its capacity.
