Bhopinder Singh PUDUCHERRY: Lieutenant Governor Bhopinder Singh on Friday suggested that the Cabinet introduce the Goondas Act to “empower” the police to check crime . Shortly after holding discussions with Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, his Cabinet colleagues and officials on the law and order situation in Puducherry, he told reporters that there was an urgent need to empower the police with more powers such as the Goondas Act. “I have asked the Chief Minister to consider invoking the Act after discussing it at the next Cabinet meeting,” Mr. Singh said. He had also directed the Police Department to take up “proactive, preventive measurers to avoid law and order problems.” “I have also asked the police to come up with proposals to tackle law and order situation. In a month’s time I want the police to bring back normality,” he said. Admitting that the recent spate in the number of crimes had led to a slight deterioration in law and order, Mr. Singh said a peaceful atmosphere was vital to sustaining growth, especially in the tourism sector. On whether he had convened the meeting as per any direction from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, he said, “It was my own decision .” A release from Raj Nivas said that Mr. Singh also took up the issue of urgency to clear files relating to important projects and schemes without delay.
