TRADITIONAL START: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa performing puja before assuming charge at the Vidhana Soudha on Friday.

BANGALORE: If separation between the State and religion is a constitutional mandate, it was thrown to the winds on Friday as the Vidhana Soudha, housing the State Government secretariat, and the Chief Minister’s chamber, saw half a dozen priests performing pujas to Ganesha and the Navagrahas.

The room reverberated with the sound of Vedic chants.

In attendance were B.S. Yeddyurappa, his daughters and one of his sons, along with relatives who came from far-flung areas of the State and Solapur in Maharashtra.

Also present were the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, legislators and the newly sworn-in ministers apart from sundry others who greeted the new Chief Minister before he left for his maiden cabinet meeting in the adjoining Cabinet Hall.

Mr. Yeddyurappa took his seat in the chief ministerial chair after offering prayers.

Ceremony over, Mr. Yeddyurappa dashed off to participate in a special homa in Malleswaram Ganesha Temple.

His colleagues Krishna Palemar visited the Arka Mahaganapathi Temple on K.G. Road and S. Suresh Kumar hotfooted it to the Mahalakshmi Temple in Rajajinagar.

Another minister R. Ashok offered puja at a temple in his Padmanabhanagar constituency.
