SALEM: A two-member team from Central Empowered Committee, an authority constituted by the Supreme Court, inspected Kanjamalai near here on Thursday and Friday.

The team led by committee Chairman P.V. Jayakrishnan and member Mahendra Vyas visited the hills following the Jindal group’s proposal to mine iron ore from the hills. The team visited various villages including Reddymaniyakkaranur, Uthukinaru, Kalparapatti, Sadaiyandi Oothu, Pothiyan Theru and Naickanpatti and interacted with the villagers.

They told the team that the mining activities in the area would affect the environment. They also submitted petitions in this regard to the team. Official sources said that the clearance from the committee was important to carry out mining in the reserved forest. Senior officials accompanied the team.
