News Analysis
In an article “Frozen judicial salaries: a crisis” (Editorial page, May 29, 2008), the third paragraph was “Compare these with the salaries in the higher courts. The Chief Justice of India gets a salary of Rs. 33,000 and other judges of the Supreme Court get Rs. 30,000. The Chief Justices of the High Courts are paid Rs. 40,000 and other judges Rs. 26,000 ….” The Chief Justices of the High Courts are paid Rs. 30,000. The seventeenth paragraph in an article “A forum to counter G-8’s supremacy” (Op-Ed, May 29, 2008) was “It would be logical to expect closer interaction between the two groups and also with the IBSA (India-Brazil-South Africa) Dialogue Forum, which met in South Africa a few days before the Yekaterinburg meetings. India, incidentally, is the only country among the members of RIC, BRIC and IPSA, which participates in all the three groups and is therefore uniquely positioned to provide additional linkages among them.” It should have been IBSA in the second instance. The fifth paragraph in an article “Terrorism: tilting at windmills” (Editorial page, May 28, 2008) was “Washington Post journalists Dan Eggen and Julie Tate, however, soon blew the lid on that claim, using a United States Justice Department list of terrorism prosecutions. Just 39 people had been convicted of charges related to terrorism or national security in the three years after the tragic event of September 11, 2005.” 9/11 was on September 11, 2001. In the same article, the thirteenth paragraph was “In October, 205, Miami resident Narseal Batiste told grocer in October 2005 that he wanted to conduct jihad to overthrow the U.S. government ….” The sentence should have been “In October 2005, Miami resident Narseal Batiste told a grocer that he wanted to conduct jihad to overthrow the U.S. government ….” It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
