dated May 31, 1958: Return of De Gaulle

General De Gaulle, in a statement issued in Paris on May 29, gave details of his conditions for forming a Government in this “decisive moment for the destiny of the nation.” Gen. De. Gaulle said that he had told President Coty that he proposed his Government should receive for a stated period the full powers necessary to act in the present situation. He also proposed that the Government should receive a mandate, according to a procedure provided for by the present Constitution, to prepare the changes that should be made in the Constitution. The General said he could count on the ardent and resolute help of the whole French people to accomplish this national mission.
