Governor releases book on tribals

Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: Governor M.C. Bhandare has urged the Government and agencies working for tribal welfare to speed up their welfare works being taken up for the upliftment of the tribals in the State. He told them to meet the target of providing education to all in stipulated time.

Releasing the book ‘Bring them to school: Primary education for tribal children’ written by Jnanapith awardee writer and an expert on tribal studies Sitakant Mohapatra at the Raj Bhawan here on Wednesday, Mr. Bhandare pointed out that while Orissa is a poor State, its tribals are even more poorer due to lack of education.

Mohapatra’s book would serve as a manual for the various NGOs and government agencies for providing education to tribals and their overall development, he hoped.

Speaking about the book, Mr. Mohapatra elaborated that the State has 62 tribes of which Juanga, Dongaria Kondh and Bonda tribes are the primitive tribes.

His studies were based on primary education in the villages inhabited by these three tribes.

The study had revealed that these villages need the required environment for promotion of education.

Academician Prafulla Kumar Tripathy, who also addressed the gathering, regretted that the tribal pockets of the State has the infrastructure to carry on primary education programmes but lack of commitment on the part of the people, who are implementing it has jeopardised the programmes.

Poet Purabi Das coordinated the event.
