CUTTACK: In the wake of rapid increase of molestation, eve teasing and trafficking of girls in Orissa, a State-level voluntary organisation has urged the government to set up sexual harassment committees at institutional levels. The Committee for Legal Aid to Poor (CLAP) expressing shock over the recent suicide of a superintendent of Balasore-based destitute women’s home, has come up with the idea in the light of a ruling passed recently by the Supreme Court of India. Even the National Social Welfare Board and the Union Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry too have suggested forming such committees to check the spurt of crime against woman, CLAP maintained. The Balasore woman Rajalaxmi Panda, a law student committed suicide by jumping in front of a speeding train earlier this month. She had apparently taken the extreme step after she was raped and sexually tortured by a Bhadrak college teacher. The teacher however has since been arrested under section 376 (rape) and 306 (abetting suicide) of IPC and was remanded to jail. A delegation of the NGO led by its executive president Bikash Das held a discussion on the subject with Swadhikar forum, a federation of Swadhar Homes and Short Stay Homes and it was agreed that constitution of sexual harassment committees would go a long way in protecting the poor .
