Basavaraj Naika won the polls on a BJP ticket His style of functioning termed ‘unholy’ DAVANGERE: Y. Ramappa, president of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat, who contested from Mayakonda as the Congress candidate, said he had been defeated because of a Bharatiya Janata Party wave all over the State. Addressing presspersons here on Friday, he alleged that M. Basavaraj Naika, the BJP candidate elected from Mayakonda, was in the Congress till recently, and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party only to get nominated to contest the election. Describing such “defection” as “unholy,” Mr. Ramappa said Mr. Naika was made president of the Davangere Taluk Panchayat some time ago by S.S. Mallikarjun, president of the Davangere Congress Committee, who had brought him into the political limelight. Mr. Ramappa said Mr. Naika had betrayed the party that helped him grow politically by taking advantage of Mr. Mallikarjun’s support. He said that he was not upset because of the defeat by Mr. Naika, but felt that the latter should not have deserted the party. Mr. Ramappa said he would continue his village stay programme from the first week of June and continue to serve the people of the district as president of the zilla panchayat. He said that he would ensure that the six pilot project proposed a few months ago to provide drinking water to over 100 villages in the district was implemented well. The project had to be kept in abeyance because of the model code of conduct, he said and added that as the elections were now over, work would begin soon.
