FOR SAFER ROADS: Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna with members of the Students Traffic Volunteers Scholarship Scheme in New Delhi on Friday. At left is Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal. NEW DELHI: A hundred students were inducted into the Student Traffic Volunteers Scholarship Scheme at India International Centre here on Friday in a bid to make the Capital’s roads safer. Beginning this coming Monday, June 2, the student traffic volunteers will man important intersections including those at Ashram Chowk, ITO, Shanti Van, Nehru Place and Azadpur Crucial aspectsSpeaking on the occasion, Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna observed: “Developing a habit of voluntary compliance of rules and regulations on the road would have a positive change on society and help make it more civilized and developed.” Mr. Khanna said adequate road capacity, good condition of vehicles and road users’ behaviour were the three crucial aspects for a safe and smooth driving experience but a lot had to be done for autonomous traffic regulation on the Capital’s roads. “The Government is doing a lot of work at the institutional level. Even these student traffic volunteers can contact the traffic management centre with suggestions or for help round the clock. The centre is located at Teen Murti and is managed by the Delhi police,” he added. The L-G said the volunteers could even approach Delhi Development Authority’s Traffic Engineering Centre if they observed any fault or discrepancy in a road structure or any other traffic-related problem. He handed over identity cards to the students as a token of their induction into the force. The 10 girls and 90 boys inducted would be given a monthly stipend of Rs.2,000 each. The scheme has been sponsored by Hyundai Motor India Ltd.
