Now rebates for senior citizens above 60 years

Staff Reporter

New class created of 60-65 years and up to 200 sq.m.

Extra 30% rebate on property up to 200 sq.m. for citizens over 65 years, differently-abled, women

30% rebate allowed for ex-Servicemen on village “abadi” properties up to 200 sq.m.

NEW DELHI: Ending weeks of speculation over rebates to be offered on property tax in the Capital, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi came clean on Friday at a special meeting of the MCD Standing Committee, announcing rebates for senior citizens over 60 years of age and women among others. Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said though the civic body had been offering rebates to senior citizens above 60 years of age for the past four years, these were “unconstitutional” as Section 114 (b) of the DMC Act provided rebate to senior citizens 65 years or more of age.

“We were advised by our chief legal adviser and the Additional Solicitor-General of India to overcome the oversights of Section 114 (b) by creating a new ‘class’ of 60-65 years. Our legal advisers told us that the civic body was well within its rights to create a new class of 60-65 years and up to 200 square metres under Section 177 of the Act,” he added.

He said, for now, the rebates offered would include a 30 per cent rebate to senior citizens between 60-65 years for up to 200 sq.m. of land and an additional 30 per cent rebate to senior citizens over 65 years of age, differently-abled persons and women.

Other rebates allowed are on village “abadi” properties, a 30 per cent rebate to ex-Servicemen (up to 200 sq.m) and a 10 per cent rebate to Delhi Development Authority and Central Government Health Scheme flats (up to 100 sq.m.).“The matter will be discussed at a meeting of the House on Monday. Besides, the software for online tax filing will also be updated,” he said.
