KOLAR: For Malur MLA, S.N. Krishnaiah Shetty, it was a case of lady luck smiling at him, finally. Mr. Shetty, a strong contender for the ministerial berth during the Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition, could not make it. He even failed to get the place from BJP quota neither during the expansion of that ministry nor when B.S. Yeddyurappa was sworn in as Chief Minister last November. Now, with the induction of Mr. Shetty into B.S. Yeddyurappa Ministry, his dream has been realised. Son of Shivarapatna Narayan Shetty, the BJP district unit president, Mr. Krishnaiah Shetty has won the election for the second consecutive term. He is among the only two BJP candidates from Kolar district to have tasted success. Although Mr. Shetty has been considered to be on the losing side throughout the run up to the elections, he emerged victorious with a margin of 52,323 votes, second highest for any candidate in 2008 Assembly election in the State. While Mr. Shetty secured 78,010 votes, his nearest rival R. Prabhakar of Janata Dal (Secular) managed 25,687 votes pushing the Congress to the third place with only 9,364 votes. Upset with controversies related to the model code of conduct violation, Mr. Shetty decided to refrain from elections. But mounting pressure from supporters made him to change his mind. Mr. Krishnaniah Shetty even filed nomination papers in the name of his wife fearing rejection of his nomination owing to alleged violation of poll code. In the end, Mr. Shetty won for the second consecutive term belying all political calculations. Social work in the taluk through S. Narayan Shetty Charitable Trust was said to be the source of strength and support base of Mr. Shetty.
