Meena man killed “out of old enmity”

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: A man belonging to the Meena community was killed on Friday in Rajasthan’s Neem Ka Thana tehsil. Two persons have been arrested, neither of whom is a Gujjar.

Neem Ka Thana in Sikar district has had a history of violent Meena-Gujjar feuds running for years. Gujjars are now on the warpath demanding ST status.

Maniram Gujjar reportedly drove his vehicle over Shankar Meena (45) of Gaveli village. “Someone has seemingly provoked Maniram to act,” Kailash Meena, cousin of the victim and leader with the Bahujan Samaj Party, told The Hindu. “However we won’t allow it to turn in to a Meena-Gujjar issue,” he said.

“It has nothing to do with the Meena-Gujjar discord. Old enmity is the reason for the murder,” Nitin Deep, Superintendent of Police, said. “The body has been cremated and there is no tension in the area.”

A day before, clashes between a Gujjar group and members of a Tanwar family in Jhalawar district’s Bakani tehsil led to the death of four brothers, besides injuries to 11.
