It was a much debated, discussed issue: sources ‘Panel will carry out functions in transparent manner’ NEW DELHI: The Delhi Urban Arts Commission has been re-constituted. To be headed now by K.T. Ravindran, Professor and Head of the Department of Urban Design at the School of Planning and Architecture, the Commission also has on board Delhi University Professor Nayanjyot Lahiri, landscape artist Professor Mohd. Shaheer and conservation architect Ratish Nanda. This past March, DUAC members led by its then chairperson Charles Correa had resigned in protest against the Delhi Government’s claim that the panel was acting as a hurdle in projects related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games. According to sources, the Union Urban Development Ministry “took long” to re-constitute the Commission. “It was a much debated and discussed issue. After the DUAC members led by Charles Correa resigned, it was proposed that bureaucrats should be at the helm of affairs in the Commission. But Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy turned down the suggestion and insisted on having professionals on Board,” said sources in the Ministry. Speaking to The Hindu on the re-constitution of the Commission, Prof. Ravindran said: “The Commission will endeavour to carry out its functions in a transparent manner, make sure that the city’s carbon footprint is reduced and ensure that the quality and spirit of heritage in the city is maintained.”
